Looking Forward To The New Year – Are You Chasing After the Wind or Building Treasures in Heaven?

As we stand on the brink of a brand-new year, it’s natural to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed. For many, the beginning of a new year is filled with resolutions and goals—dreams of progress, success, and making the most of our time. But as we consider what lies ahead in the new year, there’s a question we should ask ourselves: Are we chasing after the wind?

The phrase comes from Ecclesiastes 2:11, where Solomon writes:
“Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”

Solomon, the wisest and wealthiest king, had accomplished incredible things—building palaces, amassing wealth, gaining knowledge, and indulging in every pleasure. Yet, he concluded that all his pursuits, when done for worldly gain, amounted to nothing. They were like chasing the wind—fleeting, futile, and without lasting impact.

I can relate to Solomon’s sentiment. Sometimes I feel like I get so busy, but at the end of the day, I wonder what I’ve actually accomplished. It’s so easy to fill our lives with activities, appointments, and to-do lists that don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. I’ve found myself overwhelmed, caught up in the busyness of life, only to realize that I haven’t made space for the things that truly count.

One lesson I’ve learned is the importance of securing the “big rocks” in life—the things that matter most. For me, that’s making time for church, attending cell group, and investing in my relationship with God and others. When I let those priorities slip, I feel the difference. My life becomes cluttered, and I lose the sense of peace and purpose that comes from focusing on what’s eternal.

As I look ahead to the new year, I also want to make space for things that nurture my relationships and personal growth. That means prioritizing time with friends and family—being intentional about creating memories and deepening those bonds. It also means carving out moments for self-care, whether it’s through quiet time with God, exercise, or pursuing new skills. One thing I’m excited about this year is learning how to cut hair! It may seem like a small thing, but I see it as an opportunity to serve my family while doing something creative and practical.

It’s also a good time to reflect on how we’re spending our time, energy, and resources. Are we caught up in accumulating treasures that will eventually fade, or are we investing in eternal rewards? Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:19-20:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

So, how can we focus on building treasures in heaven this year? Here are a few ideas:

    1. Prioritize Relationships Over Possessions
Spend more time nurturing your relationships with family, friends, and your community. These connections bring eternal value, especially when they’re centered on God’s love.
    2. Serve Others
Look for ways to serve those in need. Whether through volunteering, offering financial help, or simply being present for someone, these acts of kindness reflect God’s kingdom.
    3. Secure the Big Rocks First
Don’t let life’s busyness crowd out what matters most. Set aside time for God, church, and spiritual growth before filling your schedule with other commitments.
    4. Make Space for Growth and Rest
Balance your schedule with time for personal development, self-care, and learning something new. These moments of renewal help us give our best to others.
    5. Seek God’s Will in All You Do
Before committing to new goals or projects, ask yourself if they align with God’s purposes. Invite Him into your planning process.

As you plan and dream for the year ahead, take time to pause and consider: Will this build lasting treasures in heaven, or is it simply chasing after the wind? By aligning our priorities with God’s eternal perspective, we can make next year a year of true purpose and fulfillment.

Let’s enter the year with a heart set on the things that last forever!
