Why Strive to Live for God When Salvation Is Already Ours?

As Christians, we know that salvation is a gift of grace, not something we earn (Ephesians 2:8-9). Through Christ’s death and resurrection, the prize of eternal life is already won for us. But this raises a compelling question: If we already have the prize of salvation, why should we still strive to do our best, live according to God’s plan, and work to build His Kingdom?

This very topic came up during our small group discussion last Saturday. As we reflected on the incredible gift of salvation, we also wrestled with what it means to live in light of that gift. One question stood out: What motivates our striving if we’re already secure in Christ? Here are some of the insights that emerged:

We Strive Out of Love and Gratitude

The starting point of our discussion was love. Our effort to live for God is not about earning His favor—it’s a response to His incredible love for us. Imagine a child who receives a thoughtful gift from a parent. They don’t try to “repay” their parent but might naturally want to express gratitude through actions like a hug, a thank-you card, or obedience.

In the same way, we strive because we are grateful. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:14, “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.” Striving to live in His will isn’t about obligation; it’s about joyfully responding to His immense love.

We Are Called to Reflect His Glory

Another key point we discussed is how our striving shines a light for others. Matthew 5:16 reminds us, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

When we live according to God’s plan, striving to do our best, we reflect His character. Someone in our group shared how a kind word or act of service can show others what God is like, even in small, ordinary moments. Striving to reflect God’s glory can inspire faith and hope in others, pointing them to the ultimate prize found in Jesus.

We Are Co-Laborers in Building God’s Kingdom

Salvation is secure, but God doesn’t call us to sit idle. Instead, He invites us to join Him in His work. 1 Corinthians 3:9 says, “For we are co-workers in God’s service.” This means our lives are meant to contribute to God’s purposes on Earth.

Whether it’s sharing the Gospel, helping those in need, or nurturing our families in the faith, our work matters. It’s an incredible privilege to be used by God, and striving to build His Kingdom helps us experience the joy of being part of something eternal.

We Pursue Holiness for Our Growth

Our group also reflected on how striving to live in God’s will is a process that transforms us. Though the prize is already won, God uses our efforts to sanctify us—to make us more like Christ.

Philippians 3:13-14 says, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” This striving isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. It’s God’s way of refining us so we’re ready for the fullness of eternity with Him.

Our Work Has Eternal Impact

One of the most powerful moments of our discussion was realizing that even our smallest acts of faithfulness matter. Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-20).

When we live for God’s glory, serve others, and follow His plan, we’re investing in things that will last forever. Whether it’s teaching a Sunday school class, being a source of encouragement, or simply loving your family well, your work has eternal value.

We Strive in God’s Strength

Finally, we reminded each other that we don’t strive alone. Philippians 2:13 tells us, “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.” Our striving is fueled by the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live out God’s plan.

Takeaway: Strive to Glorify God

The prize of salvation motivates us to live boldly for God’s glory—not because we must, but because we want to. Let our striving be fueled by a heart that overflows with love for the Savior who gave everything for us.

For me, one small way I can align my life with God’s plan this week is to think of how I can bring joy to others around me. A smile, a kind word, or an encouraging note could be a way to reflect Christ’s love.
