My Personal Journey with the R.O.A.D + P Template
Maintaining a consistent Bible reading habit used to be a real struggle for me. I often felt overwhelmed, and I’d lose momentum quickly. Everything changed when I discovered the R.O.A.D + P method, which is similar to the SOAP method but includes an extra step that my church emphasizes.
While the SOAP method (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) is fantastic, the R.O.A.D + P method adds an important step: Do. This extra step focuses on immediate, practical actions based on what you’ve learned. It helps break down broader applications into specific, short-term actions that you can start implementing right away.
The R.O.A.D + P template has been a game-changer for me. It provides a structured yet flexible approach to Bible reading, making it easier to stay engaged and inspired. This method serves as a guide to help me understand and live out the Bible’s teachings more effectively.
How the R.O.A.D + P Template Works
Scripture Reading
Start by selecting a passage or a few verses from the Bible. Read it slowly and carefully, maybe even a couple of times, to really grasp its meaning.
R - Read
Summarize: In your own words, write a short summary of what you read. What's the main point?
Highlight: Note any key points or themes that stand out.
O - Observe
Notice: Write down anything that catches your attention. Are there any interesting words or ideas?
Reflect: Jot down any questions or insights that come to mind.
A - Apply
Personalize: Think about how this passage relates to your life. What can you learn from it?
Internalize: Consider how it affects your thoughts and attitudes. Write down your thoughts.
D - Do
Action: Identify specific actions you can take based on what you’ve learned. How will you put this into practice?
Plan: Set simple, practical goals to make these actions part of your daily routine.
P - Prayer
Pray: Write a short prayer asking for help to live out the teachings from the passage. Include any specific requests or things you’re thankful for.
Example: Applying the R.O.A.D + P Method
Read:
Write out which verse in the passage spoke to you. For example, Matthew 22;39 ("Love your neighbor as yourself")
Observe:
You note down how important love is in this teaching. Think about why Jesus emphasized this.
Apply:
Reflect on how you can show love in your daily life. Think about your relationships and how you treat others.
Do:
Decide to do something specific, like helping a neighbor or being more patient with others. Set a goal to show kindness every day.
Prayer:
Write a prayer asking for strength and opportunities to love others as yourself.
