Lent Check-In: 5 Questions to Refocus Your Heart

Lent isn’t about doing more. It’s about becoming still enough to notice what God is doing in you. Halfway through the season, I took some time to pause and ask: Where am I with God right now? Am I truly drawing closer—or just going through the motions?

These five journaling questions helped me check in with my heart, and I wanted to share my reflections in case they encourage you to do the same. You don’t need perfect answers—just honesty, a little time, and a heart willing to meet with Jesus.

1. How have I experienced God’s presence during this Lenten season?

God has been speaking to me through Scripture, especially in two passages that came up during this season. The first is the story of the woman at the well, where Jesus says:

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:13–14 (NIV)

And the second:

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 6:35 (NIV)

Water and bread—two simple, essential things. But in Jesus, they become more than just physical nourishment. They become the answer to the longing in our souls. I’m realizing that instead of chasing after other things to feel satisfied, He’s offering me exactly what I need: Himself.

2. What am I learning about myself through my Lenten fast or sacrifice?

There were two things I knew I needed to do—reach out to a ministry partner about monthly visits with an elderly person, and contact a lady I’m meant to be mentoring. But I didn’t do it right away. I put it off for about two weeks.

At first, I felt a bit bad. Like, “Shouldn’t I be getting on with it?” But looking back, I actually thank God for that time. I think He gave me space to just rest, and to get right with Him before stepping into anything else. It wasn’t about avoiding the work—it was about slowing down and making sure my heart was in the right place. Sometimes we move ahead too quickly, and God’s like, “Wait—come sit with Me first.”

3. Have I made room for silence, prayer, or Scripture—and how has it shaped my days?

In the mornings, I’ve started kneeling down and committing the day to God. It helps center me and remind me who’s really in charge. That simple act of prayer has brought clarity and even conviction—God’s been showing me some habits I need to let go of.

Last week, I was waiting to hear back about a barbering course I’d applied for. I hadn’t heard anything, and I asked God, “If I get a reply tomorrow, I’ll take that as a sign to move forward.” That night, at 11:45pm, I received a response.

In that moment, I was reminded of Jesus’ words:

“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Matthew 14:31 (NIV)

I kind of laughed to myself—God really answered, even when my faith felt small. It reminded me that He’s listening, even when I question. And that He’s patient with me, even when I need reassurance.

4. Is there a part of my heart that needs healing, forgiveness, or surrender?

I think I need to stop being so hard on myself. I get caught up in wanting things to happen quickly—especially with things like my hair classes. But I’m learning to trust God’s timing. I’ve been committing my schedule and availability to Him, believing that He’ll open the right doors at the right time. I don’t have to force it—He’s got it covered.

5. How can I live more like Jesus in these final days leading up to Easter?

One thing that’s on my heart is to have more real, authentic conversations with people. To slow down and really listen. Jesus wasn’t in a rush when He talked to people—He gave them His full attention. I want to do the same. Whether it’s a friend, a stranger, or someone God puts in my path, I want to be present and kind like He was.

If Lent has felt quiet or even slow for you, maybe that’s exactly where God wants you. He’s not after perfect performance—He’s after your heart. Whether you’re feeling strong or struggling, He’s near. He is your living water. He is your daily bread. And He’s walking with you all the way to Easter.
