Music has always been a profound way to connect with God. Hymns, in particular, have a unique ability to stir our hearts and remind us of God’s faithfulness, grace, and love. Today, I want to share 10 of my favourite timeless hymns, each of which holds a special place in my heart and faith journey, along with the stories of their writers and composers.
1. Be Thou My Vision
Lyrics: Traditional Irish hymn (translated by Mary E. Byrne, versified by Eleanor H. Hull)
Tune: Traditional Irish melody, often called Slane
This ancient hymn has been a cornerstone of my life, and I chose it for my wedding. The words remind me that, above all else, Christ is my guide. “Thou my best thought, by day or by night” beautifully encapsulates the need to rely on God’s vision for my life, in both joyful and challenging times. This hymn always brings me back to Proverbs 3:5-6, where we’re reminded to trust in the Lord and not lean on our understanding.
2. It Is Well with My Soul
Lyrics: Horatio G. Spafford
Tune: Philip P. Bliss
Whenever life feels overwhelming, I turn to this hymn. The powerful story behind it makes the lyrics even more meaningful. Horatio Spafford wrote this hymn after the tragic loss of his four daughters in a shipwreck. Despite his unimaginable grief, Spafford’s faith in God remained strong, and he penned the words, “It is well with my soul,” as a testament to his unwavering trust in God. Philip P. Bliss composed the beautiful melody. This hymn reminds me of Philippians 4:7, which speaks of the peace that surpasses all understanding.
3. Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Lyrics: Thomas O. Chisholm
Tune: William M. Runyan
This hymn is a beautiful reminder that God’s faithfulness never wavers, no matter what we go through. Chisholm wrote this hymn later in life as a reflection on God’s constant provision, despite facing many struggles with illness and financial instability. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” William Runyan composed the accompanying music, bringing Chisholm’s words to life. This hymn reminds me to see God’s hand in both the little and big moments of my life.
4. Amazing Grace
Lyrics: John Newton
Tune: Traditional American melody (New Britain)
“Amazing Grace” is perhaps the most well-known hymn, with a powerful message of redemption. John Newton, a former slave trader, wrote this hymn after his conversion to Christianity. His life transformation and recognition of God’s grace are woven into the famous lines, “I once was lost, but now am found.” The melody New Britain is a traditional American tune that pairs perfectly with Newton’s profound words. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith,” and this hymn beautifully captures the essence of that truth.
5. O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
Lyrics: Charles Wesley
Tune: Thomas Jarman (Lyngham)
This jubilant hymn was written by Charles Wesley to mark the one-year anniversary of his conversion to Christianity. Its joyful celebration of God’s power and grace has resonated with believers for centuries. Thomas Jarman composed the most commonly used melody, Lyngham, which perfectly matches the exuberant praise of Wesley’s words. It reminds me of Psalm 98:1, “Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things.”
6. I Surrender All
Lyrics: Judson W. Van DeVenter
Tune: Winfield S. Weeden
Surrendering fully to God is one of the hardest yet most freeing decisions we can make. Judson Van DeVenter, a teacher and musician, wrote this hymn after a personal struggle to fully dedicate his life to ministry. Winfield Weeden composed the music, giving this hymn its heartfelt melody. “I Surrender All” expresses the joy and peace that comes from fully trusting God with everything. It echoes Matthew 16:24, where Jesus calls His followers to deny themselves and take up their cross.
7. The Old Rugged Cross
Lyrics and Tune: George Bennard
The cross is central to our faith, and this hymn reminds us of its significance. George Bennard, an evangelist, wrote both the words and music as he reflected on the suffering of Christ and the beauty of His sacrifice. “I will cling to the old rugged cross” speaks of the deep gratitude we feel for Jesus’ sacrifice. 1 Peter 2:24 tells us, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross,” making this hymn a powerful reminder of redemption.
8. Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
Lyrics and Tune: Helen H. Lemmel
This simple yet powerful hymn was written by Helen Lemmel, inspired by a Christian pamphlet that encouraged believers to “turn their eyes upon Jesus.” Lemmel also composed the music, giving the hymn its tender, reflective melody. The hymn encourages us to focus on Christ amidst life’s distractions. It reminds me of Hebrews 12:2, which calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
9. Blessed Assurance
Lyrics: Fanny J. Crosby
Tune: Phoebe P. Knapp
“Blessed Assurance” is a hymn of confidence and joy in the promises of God. Fanny Crosby, one of the most prolific hymn writers in history, wrote these beautiful words about the assurance of salvation. Phoebe Knapp, a friend of Crosby, composed the melody after playing it for Crosby and inspiring her to write the lyrics. The words, “This is my story, this is my song,” remind me that my identity and security are rooted in Christ. 1 John 5:13 assures us of eternal life, and this hymn echoes that message of hope.
10. Holy, Holy, Holy
Lyrics: Reginald Heber
Tune: John B. Dykes (Nicaea)
This hymn focuses on the holiness of God. Reginald Heber, an Anglican bishop, wrote it to be sung on Trinity Sunday, reflecting on God’s triune nature. John B. Dykes composed the majestic tune Nicaea, named after the Council of Nicaea, where the doctrine of the Trinity was affirmed. The awe and reverence in the words, “Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!” are inspired by Isaiah 6:3, where the angels declare the holiness of the Lord. Singing this hymn reminds me of the majesty and splendor of God, who is worthy of all honor and praise.
Conclusion: The Power of Hymns in Worship
These hymns have been more than just songs to me—they’ve been anchors of faith in both the highs and lows of life. Each one tells a story of God’s grace, love, and faithfulness, offering encouragement to live with a heart turned toward Him. They connect us not only to scripture but also to the rich heritage of Christian worship.
